Actually, it is a big jump. Even with NDS, it was a huge jump. But with 3DS, it is now an order of magnitude more work to go from dumping an EEPROM to dumping Nintendo's custom mask ROM with built-in hardware encryption layer. The EEPROM still uses the SPI pins on the card edge. And the ROM still uses the full bus. The logic is not difficult to follow, but the encryption is. eg.
