Title: All in a day's work.
Oh your god! Somehow I landed a job in San Francisco, CA. So Friday night, I drove up here, 13 hours of driving, all alone. And then I parked my Jeep in a public garage for something outrageous like $1/hr. And I fumbled through the dark, just making it to my hotel! I've been there since, looking for an apartment in the city. Not really my cup of tea, the city. But I think I will manage. I did find one pretty cool place. Or at least, it will do for now. It's a roommate situation, and I do not know the girl, but she seems really nice and interesting, and apparently I didn't scare her, which is always a good thing.

Anyway, the company wants me to start tomorrow, which I might just manage, if I can get my parking permit and such things taken care of, as well as moving into the apartment! In any case, things are a bit different, so I'm just trying to hack it, at this point.

More as it develops. I guess.

I'm not going to share the name of the company, just yet. Suffice to say it's a tech startup that's building a social networking platform with all the cool modern web technologies like HTML5, CSS3, and sexy JavaScript. The backend is apparently Tornado, PHP, MySQL shards, memcached, and a little bit of Python. Hosting provided almost entirely by Amazon EC2/S3, of course. The MySQL stuff is a bit odd, but I think it might be migrating to SimpleDB... Or already migrated. My first day in the office is tentatively set for tomorrow. And the salary is double what I was making in Flagstaff, so that's a big bonus.

The only place to go from here is up.

Oh and one last thing: The server that runs the following domains is down until I get all of my furniture moved into the state:
http://hg.kodewerx.org/
http://trac.kodewerx.org/
http://parasyte.kodewerx.org/
http://kodewerx.pwnz.org/

... And maybe some others.

Welcome to California, buddy.

I have friends up there and it would be really cool if I happen to meet you on the streets somewhere when I visit sometimes. Where do you live by in San Fran? Any specifics you don't mind sharing? I know the area a little.

I'm moving into the highrises at Parkmerced, near Lake Merced. I work in SOMA. It's a good bit of a commute, but it will do for now.

I know that place! That place is right near UC Merced right? Some of my friends go to college there. Whenever I visit, we always go to SF - which is pretty much like couple of hours away from the bay. Hahah, yeah it's a good community. It's nice and quiet there because it's away from the metro area if you're one of those people who hate the city life yet it's not that bad since everything is close to Merced - well, I wouldn't say close but it's a quite drivable distance.

Indeed.

Although, fuck, I don't want to drive in this area at all! Maybe if I get an early start it won't be too bad? What really sickens me is downtown. My hotel is near the Civic Center, and half the streets are one-way, with 6- and 8-way intersections. Who designed this shit? Oh, and all the homeless people. And the two universal scents in the city; pot and piss. Yeah, I kind of hate the city life.

It's going alright. Plenty of busywork for now, but it's good work. It's serious hacks for now; just making things work "good enough". Eventually I'll get to the real engineering.
