If your talking about a PC, just use the print screen button then paste that into MSPaint or Word. On a Mac, there is a tool called Grab in the utilities folder.

For game consoles, most emulators feature a screen capture button. If your running on the actual hardware you will need to get a capture card for your computer allowing you to record whatever comes into the card (like your consoles video out). For the DS, there is no publicly available method for taking screenshots (besides emulators) since it has no video out.

Wait Video? If you just want to take a picture of your screen press "prt sc" and paste it in paint, if you want to record video on your PC try hypercam 2.

On a Mac, just enable screenshots in your keyboard shortcuts and set the key combinations that you like. You can also use TinkerTool to change the screenshot file format (it defaults to PNG).
