Post subject:  My computers not displaying google..Can anyone help?
I don't know why, but for some reason my computer won't display google, (i did recently get rid of a virus) and I went for sometime thinking this was a problem with google. but after a while I forgot, went to school and remembered after getting on googles seacrh site. Now i can get on video.google.com, and images.google.com, etc. but not anything that starts with google (ex: google.com/firefox) My brother told me to clean my cache, and i did so several times, IE7 and FF2. does anyone know whats wrong or know where xp media center stores the cache?

Check the file C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\Hosts for any possible highjack attempts. Also download Spybot S&D, and use the "immunization" feature: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirrors/index.html

will spybot have any conflicts with any other current virus/spyware programs? My brother told me 2 of the different programs that offered the same protection would screw each other up and I already had AVG antivirus and antispayware from Grisoft installed. Oh well, might as well try anyway, yahoo sucks and i dont wanna use it no mores :(

If that's a list of sites in your hosts file, delete them. The hosts file shouldn't contain any configuration unless you're REALLY into crappy Windows networking.

And no, it should not conflict with other anti-spyware apps, but it might. In any case, SpyBot is my favorite, in any case.

Well, I'll probably just get rid of avg then, it slows my startup a little bit anyway. About the networking...I'm on a notebook pc so I look for open connections when I take it to friends houses, but I've only been connected to 3 routers I dont actually know, but I still dont think it should have given me that many areas in the file. Ok, I'm in C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc
I have 5 different files in here. Hosts, Networks, Services, Protocol, and and lmhosts. lmhosts is the only SAM file, and everything else is a normal file. Is this where I need to be?

Yes. Delete all lines in the hosts file except for the line:

localhost 127.0.0.1

Save it, then restart your computer. You should be able to get to google after that.

awesome, thanks for all the help guys, i ran s&d, it it did waaaay better than avg, avg almost never found anything, and it didnt find anything after the google problem. s&d found 40 problems, and scanned the whole computer in minutes.(avg took several, long, annoying, unneccessary hours..lol) i now have google up and im never getting rid of s&d! lol i feel like im asking to many questions and not helping out enough...i think ill go find some problems and help people :lol:

Be sure to update Spybot and always keep the immunization up-to-date, as well.
