Post subject: | Blocking site through router |
I've tried to block a site via the settings in my router (I'm not very good at this). It didn't work at all. Can I get some help? The router is a linksys, and I went into Access Restrictions-> Website blocking by URL address. A thought occurred to me: Do I have to put in the IP address instead? Thanks |

Yes. With one exception: If your OS's DNS server is your router's IP, then the router should be able to block domain names. That's how I have the network settings on all of my machines: point the DNS to the router. Then you can update the DNS services on the router and the settings will take place immediately for all machines on the network. (That's one advantage.) Another advantage (obviously) is that since the router does the DNS resolutions, instead of the OS, you can use domain blocking services on the router. Yet another advantage is that if you ever change ISPs, or your ISP changes their DNS server IPs, your router will automatically update them. Machines behind the router will not be able to. |

I hate to say it, but I understood almost nothing you just said. Sorry. My mistake was that I didn't enable the policy. But now I have another problem. I can block only the sites that I can ping. Is there any way I can block sites without being able to ping them? I don't NEED to block them via the router, just block them (without paying). |

You can block most sites using the HOSTS file on Windows. It only takes affect on the machine you use it on (instead of network-wide) but it works. See here for examples. |

You are a genius. I knew that already, but I might as well say it again. THANK YOU! |
