My monitor supports resolutions as high as 1440x900, but since I got the video output to my tv I can play my games at 1920x1080 res, is it safe to use that same resolution on my monitor or should I stay at 1440x900?

BTW, when I play games at that res. I turn my monitor off and play from my tv.

The TV will act as a secondary monitor, with its own resolutions that will not interfere with the primary. While its generally not safe to set the primary beyond what it is capable, it is certainly OK to set the secondary as high as it can support.
