Today, I bought a LAN Cat5e crossover cable to connect my laptop to my desktop to play a multiplayer game without the use of a switch. When I run the game, and go to multiplayer, choosing LAN (TCP/IP) connection for each computer, and then creating a game on one computer, on the other computer, the game shows up, but I cannot connect to it. I'm pretty sure the IP addresses are set correctly, so what am I doing wrong?

Check for a firewall.

The ip addresses set for the wired nic's should be unique. That is, if you have another nic, such as a wireless adaptor, neither ip sets should match.

E.g. Incorrect setup:

Wireless NIC 1: 192.168.2.10

Wired NIC 2: 192.168.2.20

Correct setup:

Wireless NIC 1: 192.168.2.10

Wired NIC 2: 10.0.0.2

my firewall is Windows Firewall, my game under the exceptions list. My nic addresses are unique, my wireless adapter ip address is 172.16.31.233, my lan adapter address is 192.168.0.1. the addresses are unique for both computers.
