Hello all, I just purchased a dell laptop from a friend(I know they suck, no need to comment) because I got a really good deal on it. However, it does not include a wireless card. I went to office depot and best buy yesterday to look for choices, and so far they are: a netgear basic wireless card ($30), a netgear MIMO wireless card ($65), or a linksys basic wireless card ($60). I talked to the help guy on staff, and he recommended to me the linksys one, because he said its easiest to set up. However, I have no problems setting things up, so if that's the only difference between the linksys and the netgear, should I just get the cheap netgear one?

I have a netgear and let you tell you something I've had it for 4 years and in that time my kids tore it apart .....I put it back together and the bitch still runs. It's being used on my kids IBM notebook.
I didnt have a problem with setting it up on my old sony notebook eaither and sony is shit. However there is a sight problem with setting it up on ubuntu hoary hedgehog it would not recognize it no matter what I tried.

out of frustration and trying to set it up on Ubuntu I switched to SUSE and it picked up the card right away.

but really people here will tell you to go with linksys.

Im sorry, in my first post the network MIMO card was a netgear also. So if i go for netgear, should i get basic, or MIMO?

I have to recommend against the Linksys one. Unlike their routers, their wireless cards are nothing special and overpriced, IMO. And unless you have a MIMO router, you won't enjoy any of the benefits of a MIMO card. However, I strongly suggest you buy online, via Newegg.com. You'll get a much better price. Also, you should investigate if the laptop has a miniPCI slot and antenna in it, because you can buy an internal wireless card, as well.

Linksys wireless cards are mediocre. Though their Linux-based routers certainly are the best available for the cost.

USB is a shitty technology, but it has a lot of support from the industry bigwigs like Intel and Microsoft (who invented the damn thing). I wouldn't even bother with the USB WiFi crap if you can avoid it. Save your USB ports for external HDDs, or hell, more USB hubs for even more external HDDs.

it should be better getting one thats the same make as your router for better performance.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys. I ended up going with a D-Link Rangebooster G card. It was only $50. I thought that the Rangebooster part would help, but so far its not really doing anything... anyway - nicky, i cant go that way since my router manufacturer is Sonicwall, and they dont make wireless cards...

The so-called Rangebooster technology will only work with a Rangebooster router. This is why I said don't bother with any of those things.

Yeah, unfortunately the guy told me, well, its ideal for use with a rangebooster router, but it will still help. Yea rite. Anyway, I am happy with it, since it's perfect for hacking WEP...


Yea, i know, no one has ever heard of it. its a business designed router, provided by Qwest.
