I am aware that there are topics regarding this in the forum, but they are incomprenhensible, unorganized, and incomplete. I'm going to reform this into a single topic where you will be able to learn how to get around an Windows XP Login.

First off, this will NOT work if the login is the original Administrator account. What I mean is, some people are dumb and well, instead of changing the administrator account to have a password, they make a NEW username and password. This is the flaw right here. This is how you get by.

EDIT: I learned from ?man a much easier way, lol, never thought of it before, knew it was there though.

EASY:

Start up computer, when you get to login screen: Ctrl + Alt + Delete, then type Administrator in username. Click ok.

HARD:

Start up the computer, repeatedly pressing the F8 key until the computer asks how you would like to run XP, you choose Safe Mode, whether you choose Network or Command Prompt doesn't matter. Anyway, it will load up, with safe mode in each corner and some info about XP at the top. Now when you come to the login screen, you SHOULD see the original account with the password, BUT you should also see an account called "Administrator" this is the standard account loaded up when you have no user accounts nor passwords. Now this is the chance part here, depending on the persons knowledge of computers, they may completley ignore the administrator account, not changing the password for the standard admin account. Which means its a PASSWORD FREE ADMIN ACCOUNT. <- Key words. Click it and you should be able to login in. Ta-Da. The computer may not have access to everything on the computer since its on Safe-Mode and some programs and etc. may not work. To get around this, go to User Accounts in the Control Panel. Make an account with admin access. Restart the computer, and login with that account. To make sure you don't leave any tracks, you should delete the Admin's and whatever account you made document folders and such before you log off or turn off the computer. Also Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management. Then go to Users and delete the account you are currently on. When you log off it will be gone and no one will ever know you were on the computer.

This may not work for school, work, etc. But it all depends on the tech guys. But it does work great for individual home computers, since many ignore the intial admin account. Say your parents put a password so you can't get on the computer? When they are away, thats your ticket to access.

Good Luck!

This isn't anything special. People too stupid to set a password for 'Administrator' deserve it. Besides, this can be done without safe mode. At the welcome screen, press CTRL+ALT+DEL, and the Administrator account (and all other hidden accounts) should appear.

Hmm... not that amazing most people think that they can hack accounts through the cmd, while they are already on the Admin Account :|.

Well anyway nice, though I already knew this....

No... T.S. It wasn't an actual hacking exploit. It was the final proof of ilikepie's idiocy.

Best way is to own your own computer so you can be your own admin. But I guess this is handy for schools and such...

My brother found that out on his own. My mother now hates him for always being on her computer, making songs with Guitar Pro.

I did a lot of backdoor hacking in HS. Everytime, once I did something I wasn't supposed to, I showed the school's system administrator. lol
It was fun and he, the system admin, always found it interesting. I don't think he ever tried to fix 'em though. lol

I guess I should reform what Blazingwolf has tried to explain.

It's CTRL+ALT+DEL(2), where you hit the delete key twice while holding down the ctrl and alt keys.

Secondly, that method will not work on Windows XP Home. You can only log in as administrator while in safe mode.

I'm going to teach you how to make a hidden account. It's quite useful.

Step 1: gain administrative access to the target machine.

Step 2: create a new user and give it administrative rights.

Step 3: open the registry editor and navigate to My Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\SpecialAccounts\Userlist

Step 4: create a new DWORD value, and set its name equal to the username of the account you just created.
Setting a value of 0 hides the account. A value of 1 will force it to become visible on the welcome screen.

Step 5: Log out of the administrative account, press CTRL+ALT+DEL(2) at the welcome screen, and log in to your new account.

Step 6: open a command prompt and navigate to C:\docume~1\

Step 7: enter the following command, where username is the name of the folder inside which are the files related to your account: attrib +h +s username

Step 8: go ahead and close the command prompt after you run that command. Navigate to the documents and settings folder to verify that the folder for your account is now missing. (Hidden).

Voila. If you do this on XP Home, you'll have to be in safe mode to access the administrative account. Once you've created your new account, restart the computer, and continue the steps from normal mode.

This will cause your hidden account to disappear from the users module in the control panel, the documents and settings folder, and the welcome screen.

Should you need to perform maintenance on it, open a run box and type: control userpasswords2
