Mac OS X is a truly great operating system. I think you're jealous that you can't afford one. Or maybe just uneducated.
The problem is, it runs on Apple hardware. If you want to run a good OS on shitty overpriced hardware, buy a cheap PC, install a bunch of blinky LEDs and excess cooling, and install Ubuntu or Debian on it.

I don't understand how you "can't afford" to switch to a better OS. It's free.

Makes me wonder, am I the only one here with a Solaris system?
I mean, no, I never use it, it sits in a corner praying for death, but still, it's got Solaris on it.

jleemero: probably. I have been meaning to experiment with Plan 9 and Darwin (plain ol' Darwin, no OS X on top of it), though.

Ubuntu is fine and all, I run it here at home and at work. (And on some servers at work, too.) But it's not OS X. Some how they have managed to wrestle Objective-C to sculpt such a beautiful operating system... It's impressive.
