I was wondering if it would be possible to dump framebuffer contents from the Wii much like GCNrd did on the GC. Are there any specific restrictions from accomplishing this, or has it just not been tried yet? I was also wondering how GCNrd did it to begin with (were details ever released?), and if this could be transferred to WiiRd/Ocarina (with new network/SD/etc. code). If so, would this work in both GC and Wii modes?

I'm pretty sure WiiRd has this feature too, but I've never used it so I can't be certain.

There are no restrictions to accomplishing this task. The XFB is stored in RAM, every time you make a RAM dump you get a copy of the screen somewhere in there.
The EFB on the other hand, which provides the extremely clear emulator-like shots without the screen smoothing applied requires that your code grab the data from the graphics hardware. This may or may not be documented in YAGCD, not sure.

If you have a USB Gecko you can use Ocarina to grab screen shots on your computer via WiiRD.
