Of course the rumours are buzzing about that this modchip doesn't work and that unlicensed Gamecube disc is blocked and so on... anyone tried using GCN AR with it yet? Any validity to these rumours at all?

Damn you, Nintendo.

EDIT: My friends' updated Wii doesn't load SDload or GCN Action Replay.

Don't update your Wiis yet.

Eh, just use the Wii disc drive serial cable. No modding required, and it allows booting burned discs and even streaming disc images over the serial cable.

I mean, no. Shut up filthy pirates, update those Wiis.

In other news, you can run unsigned gamecube code by first booting GcOS, and Wii isos :pirate: work just fine.

I updated mine, by the way.

The modchips all still work, except for one.

I was more concerned about the GCN AR. I don't intend to buy a modchip that doesn't allow homebrew.

What happens when you try to use the AR?

It gets rejected in the same way as when you try to insert any other CD/DVD that isn't a game.

Interesting. I wonder what the legality is behind that? I'd think it's different from things like the NES lockout, since:
A) The disc doesn't rely on any security hole, and
B) It worked just fine until this update was coded specifically to block it.

I'm guessing there is some legal loophole that lets them do this, otherwise wouldn't blocking modchips be illegal too?

Anyway, thanks for the warning. Looks like I won't be updating then. This may be good news, as it means the only way to run the disc on V3 might involve homebrew and/or a firmware hack.

Apparently a new WiiKey update disk was released that fixes it. I'm pretty pissed, I want to update(USB keyboard support, shopping channel doesn't work unless I do), but not if it means losing my GCN Action Replay.

I wonder if a new AR will be released to get around it, and if so, if we'll get free replacements? </dream>

Of course it is legal for Nintendo to block unlicensed disc, for the simple fact that they are unlicensed. Unlicensed software is a liability to Nintendo, no matter what their instruction manuals say about it (something about voiding your warranty, if I remember correctly). And technically, the AR does rely on something like a security hole, since it uses the NHL HITZ header on the disc image.

I'm just wondering if that new crippled GC AR was also blocked (probably was!)

They did this once before with the Gamecube, some newer model Gamecubes were not compatible with the old AR so they released a new version that did work and allowed users to mail in their old disks for new ones :>

But the Sega vs. Accolade case sets the precedence that it's completely legal for Datel to do so, in order to make their unlicensed software compatible. I think there's some legal basis for an actual lawsuit against Nintendo for this. Nintendo's own site claims all Gamecube games are compatible, and by blocking NHL Hitz they're false advertising.

I'm sure NHL Hitz actually works fine. But AR (masquerading as NHL Hitz) should not.

The Sega vs Accolade case set the precedent for how licensing protection would work in future years. The judge in the case ruled that Accolade's use of a "Licensed by" message in the ROM image without actually holding a license is legal if that message is required for compatibility. Making it a requirement for compatibility means that no copyright infringement done by Accolade.

In this case, the silent Nintendo-vs-Datel war, Nintendo is doing the opposite: Blocking unlicensed products retroactively. Not by blocking other games or adding new compatibility requirements, but most likely by checking specifically for the products they wish to have blocked. As lemma stated earlier, Nintendo have been doing this same thing all throughout GameCube's life, as well.

So what can Datel do about it? Well, they cannot file a lawsuit because their products were never licensed or endorsed for use on the hardware, in the first place. They can't complain to Nintendo, because that will be fruitless. They can't secure a license now because Nintendo probably blacklisted them long ago. The only thing they can really do is update their products and offer exchanges to previous customers.

And now they're giving out Metroid Prime 3 demos in the shop channel. I'm assuming you need to update to get them, given the "update" button in the message. -_-

You're not missing anything. Just a bunch of retarded videos. Come on, Nintendo, we want playable demos.

Google it: http://xoopsforge.com/modules/planet/vi ... .php/10417

The clock and input signals are manipulated such that it reads from the parallel (or serial) port of the computer, not from the physical disc itself.

I'd say "Go buy Zelda" but why the hell don't you have it already? :P
Also, here and here are photos that haven't been crapped on.

There is one problem with the pictures at http://www.wiili.org/index.php/Homebrew . Two of those are obviously from the Gamecube version of the game.

Indeed. Though I wouldn't doubt the exploit existed on both versions, so they just used the Gamecube version to look for one and then checked whether it'd work on Wii too.
