Recently, my computer will randomly freeze every few days. The computer says it might be a problem with disk consistancy. Is this a virus or is it just Vista sucking? I ran Norton full scan, and it found no viruses. I'd prefer someone who knew something to respond, rather than n00bs who just like to say they don't like Vista, but don't actually know why they don't like it because they are just coping what smart people say. And before anyone spams me about being dumb enough to get vista, I got this $1200 computer/monitor free.

Well... first off post up some specs of your computer.
Including RAM, Hard-Drive Space, Computer Manufacturer, etc.

God, if only you could replace operating systems!

There's a good chance your hard drive just isn't Vista-compatible. I've seen problems with older or slower hard drives and Vista.

A hard drive is a hard drive, it doesn't need to be "Vista Compatible". The more likely case is your hard drive is failing. You've probably got some bad sectors popping up. The system would crash if the page file was using a section that has bad sectors, and stored more critical data in a bad area.

On the other hand, it could also be the effect, not the cause. If some program crashes your system while there is still a write cache, there will be a need for a disk check. It's pretty tough to troubleshoot a problem like this.

Like ?man said: the hard drive may have sector defects. I had Windows XP crashed because I copied a file onto a bad sector. My advice to you is get the diagnostic tools from the manufactures web site (The one that made the hard drive, not HP) and do a complete diagnostic scan. This should take about 5 hours depending on your HDD capacity. Last resort would be to either get a replacement hard drive or Zero-fill it.

top looking at porn, that should help.

All jokes aside, my Vista has done the same thing too lately. Just run the disk defrager and disc cleanup, turn Windows Fierwall on, and if should be fine. f problems still persist, just do a System Restore, found under Accessories -> System Tools

Was that a joke, or do you really not know what Microsoft Vista is?
AND, Vista and viruses aren't related, if you get viruses, its because your antivirus sucks.

BSD is the most secure operating system available. There's a reason that the biggest sites on the internet use it.

I LOL every time I see the one Google ad: "Windows vs Linux: Get the facts" linking to a page on Microsoft.com.

Sorry for bumping up this thread, but I thought it would be more customary to reuse this topic then recreating a topic with pretty much the same title. I am trying out Vista x64 and surprisingly it have all the drivers for my machine. I have been monitoring the disk space counts, and vista is eating up disk space (1GB per hour). That is friggen' lot of disk space. It does not matter weather or not if I disabled shadow copy and system restore, it still consumes 1GB per hour. I am leaning towards dumping the Vista and go back to XP. Is this disk consumption normal for Vista users? Also this is a fresh install of Vista, no internet connection or anything like that.

I have a computer in my other room that I am pretty sure is the most secure login box on the planet. BSD, Celeron 233mhz so it takes about 30-50 seconds to login, and 15-character passwords.

It would take possibly until the end of time to crack that thing.

I know I'm not the smartest kid out there, but I think it depends on how you use the computer..I've had Vista for about 2 months I think, and not one problem regarding viruses, just programs that aren't compatible. My only major problem is slow startup/shutdown speeds which could be solved with a bit more RAM, because I've got 512mb, and like 382 of it free..I really need that 2gb of RAM.. :(

See that's the real problem with Vista. 2GB of RAM for an OS alone?

Vista ate at least 1GB of RAM on every startup and nothing else loads on startup. It is or was a fresh install until I went back to XP. RAM is not the problem for me, for I have 32GB of RAM :D .

Why the fuck do you have 32GB? Do any modern OSes even support that much?

I have a 200MHz K6, freeBSD, 45 character passwords. I have to go through and empty out root's mail every so often or I'll run out of disk space from all the miserably failed attempts at logging in via SSH. This machine is pretty slow. It has 256MB of RAM, so if it's not doing anything, it can keep up, but try and do a three or four deep SSH tunnel, and it slows to a crawl. A single SSH session uses about 75% of the CPU.

32GB = Never run out of RAM
32GB = Run fully loaded Windows XP entirely in RAM (Runs super Fast too.) but also experimental.
Is also good for using RAM drive as a temporary disk solution for fast access. Also great for temporary files such as internet files for extra security.
I hate to feel so limited, so I got as much as I can install and now I don't feel so limited anymore.
I pay for that much because I can.
BTW I also have 8 cores in my machine.
