Title: All in a day's work.
Unless you are encoding video every minute of every day, you probably have a lot of idle CPU time (you are not using all several-billion CPU cycles per second while browsing websites or playing games) that could be used for legally breaking encryption algorithms. Distributed.net has been funded by RSA to perform a distributed brute force attack against the RC5 encryption algorithm with the purpose of real-world testing against the effectiveness of brute force against these ciphers.

You can few our distributed.net team (which has been running for a few years) here: http://stats.distributed.net/team/tmsum ... team=30429

Sign up, get the distributed.net client setup for RC5-72 cracking, and just let it run. (While running, your "CPU usage" will be pegged at 99-100%. This is normal; the CPU was otherwise simply stuck in a loop for billions revolutions per second, doing a grand total of nothing. Also, it only uses the idle cycles, and will not slow down any other processes at all. It's safe to leave running at all times.)

And best of all, there is a cash prize for the group that finds the correct key first. And you just sit back and let it run. :)

After you get signed up and setup your client, you can join the Kodewerx team by visiting the team page (the link in the first post) and clicking "I want to join this team!" at the bottom of the page. When it asks for the password to join the team, it is: 8haB9HsG

I've received two emails from them yesterday after requesting the passwords. So their email system does work. Maybe they have some registration problems and need to be notified?

Also, I started two more machines on the RC5-72 project, and it's nearly tripled my total keyrate.

Pentium III (Coppermine) @ 666MHz : ~1.5M keys/s
Athlon XP 2600+ @ 2.03GHZ : ~8.0M keys/s
PowerPC G4 @ 1.5GHz : 15.5M keys/s

So I checked the site, and found a help email address. I sent them an email, and got an automated response saying some stuff, but in the end, I got my stats password . For those of you who might need some help:

Code:
Thank you for e-mailing [email protected]!

Due to the increase in spam and virus emails, we no longer directly
forward your mail to the help desk.  If your question is not answered
below, please do one of the following to get a human response:

- visit http://www.distributed.net/sendmail.php?to=help
and paste your message into the form displayed there.
- or re-send your mail to "help dash me at distributed dot net"

The questions answered below include:
- statistics problems
- getting a password for the stats
- email retirement
- bugreports
- client FAQ questions
- porting requests

Read the rest of this autoreply carefully!

If your question is related to a statistics problem, you may wish to
read the statistics FAQ at  http://faq.distributed.net/statsfaq.html

This goes especially for questions about:
- How long does it take until I get my password
- How do I get my password
- I'm switching email adresses, how to proceed.
- and many more stats-related questions.

To answer the most asked question: Your password is not mailed to you
automatically. After you have flushed some work to our servers, wait
at least 24 hours, go to:
   http://stats.distributed.net/projects.php?project_id=8
and search for your email address via the search boxes on top of the
screen. This will result in your personal statistics page and on the
bottom of that page is a link that will mail you your password.

If you have a question about your keyrate, keep in mind that we are
also running the OGR projects in addition to RC5, so check what
contest your client is running before expecting an answer.

If you want to retire an email address that is no longer valid, and
you provided enough information (old email, new email, additional
information from which we can conclude you're indeed the owner of both
emails), we will contact you with the passwords soon.

If you have a bug report for any part of the system, first check out
bugzilla, at http://bugs.distributed.net/.  First search for your bug
and if it's not there, file one.  [email protected] is not the
proper place to report bugs.

If your question relates to the operation of distributed.net clients,
check out the client FAQs at http://faq.distributed.net/

If you have porting-related questions, such as: "Will there be support
for platform xx" or "I managed to get your public source working", be
sure to visit http://www.distributed.net/porting/ first, before
expecting an answer from our technical support reps.

For other general distributed.net questions you should also check out
our FAQ index at http://faq.distributed.net/ Again: Any questions
found in the FAQs will NOT be answered.

If you are in need of more urgent technical support, you may wish to
connect to irc.distributed.net and join the channel #distributed,
where you should be able to find someone who can help with your
problem. More information on distributed.net and IRCing in general is
available at http://www.distributed.net/discussion/#irc

Thanks for participating in distributed.net!

cliff notes:

go to http://stats.distributed.net/projects.php?project_id=8 search for your user name (email address) and click the link for you. At the bottom of your stats page hit "send me my pass."

Then go to http://stats.distributed.net/team/tmsum ... team=30429 and click the link on the bottom "I want to join this team!"

anyways, here's my awesome stats: http://stats.distributed.net/participan ... &id=460822

I signed up and I'm waiting for the email so I can join the team. I'm don't think my computer will help much though, it's staying around 160,000 keys/sec.

Tolos explained how you can force the email through.

Also, be sure to configure the client so that it NEVER runs OGR, and also run the RC5-72 benchmark-all, and configure the client to use the core with the highest key rate.

What do you mean by if they find the correct key?
this sounds interesting, I might do it for the hell of it I have 3 PCs here not even turned on. heh. How's that for non CPU usage? haha

Well, the whole point is cracking a "secret message" that is encrypted with RC5-72. The only known attack against the algorithm (as far as I am aware... could be wrong!) is brute force, which means trying every single key against the encrypted message until the correct key is found.

That's what I mean.

Bumping is okay if you contribute/want to contribute something to the subject.
It's not even that far down. >.>
