Spotted this news over at Kotaku...
Apparently Datel has released the Wii Freeloader and is now selling it on their online store.
http://us.codejunkies.com/Products/Wii- ... 00593.aspx

The page claims that it works on both Wii and Gamecube games.
Knowing how Datel does things, I'm guessing the fact that it's on sale just means they started making them and won't actually be shipping for another month.

Could the AR be next? You decide!

Title: The Mad Hacker
With the 3.2 Wii menu, I'm going to trust Datel products even less than before.. The only sure route to hacking (and freeloader-like functionality) is going to be through homebrew. It would be pretty cool if we got to the point of making custom firmwear updates like PSP. And aside from the actual producs being blocked, I'd rather not pay for something if I can get it for free elsewhere. heh

I read that today while at school. Very interesting. I hope an Action Replay follows.

New information:
http://kotaku.com/362891/datel-say-free ... e-upgrades

The article seems misleading. They claim it can block new firmware updates from being applied, which is definitely possible. (As in the past, updates are stored on a separate disc partition which they could easily skip over unless Nintendo changes that.) However, the article does not seem to confirm that the disc itself can not be blocked by a future update.

Edit: Hahaha, I like the way it truncated the URL. I wish that were true.

It seems intentionally misleading. Bastards, all of 'em.

According to several people who ordered, it started shipping in Europe last week and copies are arriving now.

Random tidbits I picked up on other forums:
- In the instruction manual, Datel does warn that the device may stop working with a firmware update and they're "install at your own risk." There's nothing there about offering to replace discs that stop working.
- The US version of Brawl works fine on PAL consoles when booted with Freeloader.
- Gamecube support is apparently very poor, few games actually boot.

Aside from that, it appears that it works as advertised for Wii mode.
I hope we hear some news on an AR soon...

Edit:
New Wii firmware was released today (March 22). Apparently, it contains new security code capable of blocking the freeloader. However, it is not being used yet.
