Title: The Hackmaster
dlove67 writes "PSX-scene.com reports that the first PS3 modchip has been tested and confirmed to be working. Running off of a USB dongle, it appears to be relatively user friendly and claims to not void your warranty. Online gameplay works (at least for the time being). It's been a long time coming; cheers to the PS Jailbreak Guys."

The video is attached below if you're curious. Can't help but point out that this wouldn't have happened if Sony hadn't decided to yank the Boot Other OS option.

Pretty cool IMO.
Didn't expect it before Geohot made good progress. After he did, it was bound to come. The thing costs like 170 bucks though. You could buy a bunch of games with that kind of money.

It's just an MCU connected to the data+ and power lines on the USB port. Speculation says it's a Sony-customized i2C connection that provides a proper response to the PS3's service mode challenge. The hardware itself costs like $2 to manufacture. I wish I was joking. :(

This is pretty much what I expected, and hell, it's true of lots of these sorts of things.

Look at Wii modchips.
WiiKey's original price was over $50.
It's a $1.80 ATTiny2313 on a PCB. That's all it is.

OK, so it's not $2 ... Maybe $5.

The workhorse on the device (the PIC18F) costs about $4 in bulk: http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSea ... 50-I/PT-ND
The other components (including the 12 MHz XTAL -- the silver cylinder-looking thing) cost on the order of a handful of pennies.

Someone linked me to the Sankaku Complex article about that earlier...Sony lol.

Wrong people have all of the money and think they deserve it, like usual. Not worth reading or sighing about.

I found a site selling for $130.00. You can trust it too because it's where I got my USB Gecko.

I think the word you're looking for is "depressed".

Also when I asked about "who" I was implying "of those who actually matter". Idiots are not people.

Generally when you ask a question with "who" as what you want to know the identity of you're expecting an answer that describes a person.

Actually though, maybe not.

Sony Lawyers Crackdown on PS3 Jailbreak

By Rob Jones on Aug.27, 2010

It was only a matter of time.

Sony has obtained a court order barring the sale of the USB flash keys by an Australian company. The PS JAILBREAK mod allows the use of backup discs to be played on the PS3.

Sony obtained an injunction ordering Australian reseller Quantronics to halt sales and distribution of the device until the 31st of August.

Image

Their site was selling the mod for a pricey $170, but now has the item listed as ‘no stock‘. According to PS3News.com, Quantronics has canceled preorders for PS3 Jailbreak and are refunding customers.

Another site listed in the court document, Ozmodchips, now has the modchip listed as sold out.

Meanwhile, CVG reports that Sony can detect players who are using the PS JAILBREAK mod and are hitting them with the Banhammer:

If you’re using the PSJailbreak and you get a ’8002A227′ error code, that’s apparently the sign of a right good banning.

Despite all the lawsuits and injunctions by Sony to keep the PS3 Jailbreak out of modder's hands, it appears that a third party has made a clone. The best part is, it only requires a cheap (approximately $40) development board by Atmel, and the requisite software is open-source.

Get the Atmel code from GitHub and apply a small patch which will enable backup play (the code by itself only lets you run unsigned code, the patch allows for BD backups). The code is GPLv3.

It would be highly ironic if someone ported this to Linux USB Gadgets, then you could use a Linux device to jailbreak your PS3, to which Sony removed Linux functionality. An Android phone would be suitable.

Shibby.

I wonder if it really is using the standard USB SIE? If that's the case, any $10 USB development board will work (provided there's a psgroove port for it)... Yeah, it looks a lot like the jig_response[] array is the only important part of the psgroove sources. The rest of it is a bunch of USB control nonsense.

Depending on how it works, you may really just need a $2 fucking AVR.

Looking at it, it supports the AT90USB162.
That's $5, and some soldering (does anyone here actually do hardware other than me?).

Oh wonderful, now, we don't even need to make our own.
We can do it with a tethered fucking cellphone.

PSFreedom lets you use a Nokia N900, and there's already a port for the Palm Pre.
